Many of the instruments come with safety concerns as the contain very bright lights or lasers. But if you do the proper risk assessment and follow correct procedure then they are quite safe. Then they also need a bit of routine work to keep them going – basically to make them report the correct answer. This involves measuring samples where you know what the results should be (because many people have reported what the results is) and making any necessary corrections before measuring new samples (where many nobody knows what the results might be).
