hat’s a really good question, and quite difficult to answer! I think it depends a lot on what exactly you are studying about them, but for me the hardest part is that, alongside studying them and doing science, you also have to look after them. While other animals need much more attention, mosquitoes still need some care. You always have to be careful about their life cycle to make sure you are around when they need to be fed, or when their cages need cleaning (things like that). My coworkers and I even have to take holidays at different times, because someone always needs to be there to look after them.

Another tricky thing is that mosquitoes hatch from eggs and are larvae for the first two weeks of their lives. During that time we can’t do much with them, so we have to be very patient and wait until they become adults. With other organisms, like cells or bacteria, you usually only have to wait days or even just hours!

And of course, the worst part is probably the bites. Thankfully we keep the mosquitoes in cages, so it doesn’t happen very often!
