I use DNA to try and work out what lives in forests. Looking at which species live in the forest and how this changes as we improve the forests, e.g by planting trees or changing which trees we cut down.
From a small amount of soil you can find out the insects, fungi and bacteria live in that soil from the DNA they leave behind. You can even use DNA to work out which animals a mosquito has been feeding on from its stomach.
