It is not likely that AI will ‘take over the world’ in the sense of Skynet in the Terminator films.
However, it will in all likelihood have major impacts. We still don’t really know (as a species) how best to use the AI that has been developed so far. and AI is still developing. Also, AI is very energy-hungry so in an era when many people are environmentally conscious it is incongruous that so many people blithely use AI despite its impact. Just one AI datacentre in the UK will make a carbon footprint bigger than that which British Airways creates from its flying)!
(Ironically, Skynet’s the name of a Royal Air Force satellite system (from before the Terminator films) and that hasn’t tried to take over the world)
I don’t believe AI will take over the world like they show in films. Instead, we need to be paying attention to how very big companies are exploiting people and the environment to push AI as a magic solution to all problems (which its definitely not!)
I also worry about the impact GenAI (think Large Language Models generating text like ChatGPT or video generation like SORA) has on the economy, environment, politics and social media – for example some bad uses would be influencing elections by spreading misinformation, taking artist’s jobs etc.
