About Me:
I have recently moved to Bristol where I am a Computer Science PhD student π©πΌβπ». When I’m not doing research, I love to play the violin in a film music orchestra π», go climbing π§ββοΈ, play boardgames with my friendsβοΈ, and read lots of books π!

I studied Physics at the University of Manchester π, before getting a job back home in Worcestershire as a data scientist (which is someone who writes computer programs to learn things from different kinds of data like images, sound or text!).
I recently left my job to study for a PhD at the University of Bristol. I’m enjoying exploring the city and making new friends, going climbing π§ββοΈ and playing boardgames βοΈ. Every month I rehearse with my orchestra where we play music from films, tv or games! We do concerts several times a year which is always super fun π».
I love reading, and I will happily spend hours with my nose in a good book. I really like sci-fi, fantasy and cosy fiction books π

How I use Science in my work:
I write computer programs (called Artificial Intelligence models) to learn things from images, sound or text. It’s important to design experiments to measure how well my models do their jobs. This is like how in a science experiment at school (like dropping eggs π₯ in parachutes πͺ) you would take lots of measurements to calculate how well it’s gone (like how fast the eggs fell without breaking! π³).

My Work:
I am a PhD student studying Artificial Intelligence (AI) – which is a type of computer program that can learn things from images, sound or text! π©πΌβπ»

I want to apply AI either to helping doctors work out what illnesses a patient has, or to researching how climate change is harming the planet and how we can make things better.
I will spend 4 years studying for my PhD degree. Before this I studied Physics at the University of Manchester, and worked at a company doing scientific research using AI models.

My Typical Day:
I wake up and have breakfast in my flat while watching TV. I then go into the office at about 10am to do my reading for my lessons or to do some coding for my group project. I then have lunch with my friends and in the afternoon it’s time to go to my lessons at the university where we talk about the things we are learning this week. I then go back to my office to do some more studying. I go home between 4 and 5pm, and usually meet up with friends or do sport in the evenings.

I wake up and have breakfast in my flat while watching TV. I then go into the office at about 10am to do my reading for my lessons or to do some coding for my group project. I am currently doing a project about how companies like Netflix build their homepage to show people movies or tv shows they might like. Working in a group means we need to meet up several times in a week to check in and see what everyone has done, and if we need to help each other out!
I then have lunch with my friends and in the afternoon it’s time to go to my lessons at the university where each week on Monday a different teacher will give us a presentation about something new to learn about. On Fridays we talk about the things we have learnt this week. This is a big chat where everyone gets to say what they have read – we talk together as students and with the teacher too. Β This is good because it means we have to think for ourselves and come up with the answers to each other’s questions.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would like to donate the money to my university’s STEM outreach society so they can buy new equipment. This will help them to go out into schools or to events and inspire kids just like you to enjoy science and ask lots of questions!
