Surgery is normally done on a person or an animal after they have been given a medicine called an anaesthetic as well as some pain killers, and possibly also some medicine that makes your muscles all floppy. An anaesthetic makes them go into a super deep sleep so you can’t remember what happened during the operation once you wake up! Surgery is often done by a big team of people who are all looking after you/the patient at the same time. You learn how to do surgery at university when you train to either be a doctor, or in my case, a vet. It can feel really scary the first few times you do it, but after a while you get used to it and you feel more confident.
I don’t perform surgery myself – however, I do work with surgeons a lot to do research into how to improve surgical techniques. Surgery is a massive range of techniques, from very minor stuff that you can have done at your GPs with only local anesthetic to very invasive and complex surgeries which involve large teams, and can last hours. As Charlotte says, if you do a medical or vet med degree, you will get training in how to do surgery.
