I used to be a secondary science teacher and did this for 17 years and I have changed to being a plant inspector this year. I do miss teaching but not all the marking! I love visiting all the different beautiful places when inspecting for example Snettisham Woods and Sandringham. In my guitar lessons, I am currently learning The White Stripes’ ‘we are going to be friends’ and I have been playing some Ed Sheeran and Coldplay songs. I am quite slow at changing chords but it is fun to learn this instrument. In my choir, we sing lots of different songs and we warm up with nursey rhymes like ‘what do you do with a drunken sailor’! My dog likes to walk me, instead of the other way around! She loves running in the woods and swimming in the sea when we go to the beach! My cats mostly sleep and tell us to feed them and play with them.

How I use Science in my work:
I use a lot of plant biology in my work and also knowledge about pests and diseases. I need to understand food chains and that if plants (the producers) are damaged/ killed, this will have an effect on all other parts of the food chain/ food web. When we find a particular pests and diseases, we take a sample and send it to the lab in York to check what the species is. The lab gives us the result and then we tell the client what they need to do next. The pest might be a fungus, insect, virus or bacterium.

My Work:
I go to farms, plant nurseries and garden centres to check the plants for pests and diseases. If I find anything that might be a specific pest or disease, I take a sample and send it to the lab for testing. The lab send us the results and then we can tell the clients what to do next. It might be nothing or they might need to destroy that plant. I

As well as going to farms and garden centres, plant inspectors also visit the ‘wider environment’ to check for pests and diseases. For example, if we are inspecting a wood, we will check the oak trees for oak processionary moth which can be very irritating for humans and animals. We also take water samples to check for diseases like brown rot. It is quite fun throwing a bucket into the water but you have to remember to hold tight to the rope at the end! I love my job as every day is different and I work with a lovely team.
This oak tree was planted by Queen Victoria and luckily did not have any oak processionary moth caterpillars. -
My Typical Day:
I wake up at 7.30and have breakfast, something like porridge or yoghurt. I drive to my first visit at about 10 which could be inspecting potatoes at a farm before they are exported to a different country or going to a garden centre to check that there are no quarantine pests on their plants. I record everything through the apps on my work phone. I have lunch between 12 and 1. Sometimes I have a car picnic as I am driving around the county visiting clients. I normally check my emails and book visits in the afternoon. I can either do this at home or in the office. If I am in the office, I will catch up with the team I work with and we have biscuits together. I sometimes have training courses that can be online or I go to different places like York and London to attend. My work pays for hotels and food if I need to stay for a course. I finish work at about 4.30 and then I go home.

I am an ‘inland’ inspector which means I do not work at a port/ airport. These places get a lot of imports from other countries which need to be checked carefully so that new pests and diseases do not end up in this country. In my role, I work with clients across norfolk. Most of my clients are farms, nurseries and garden centres and some of my team work with seed companies and universities. There is not really a ‘typical days’ as every day is different and also the work varies according to the season. So, in spring and summer, we do a lot of inspecting garden centres and nurseries. In autumn, we do ‘wider environment’ surveys where we check woodlands and parks and take samples from river water near farms. In the winter, I mostly inspect produce like potatoes and parsnips on farms that are going to be exported. Sometimes I work from home as I am working though online training modules and I get to travel for training too. For example, in the summer I stayed in York for a few days to learn how to identify trees using their botanical names. I really enjoy the variety and learning new things.
This is a photo of some carnivorous plants, pitcher plants, that I inspected (very carefully) at a garden centre. If an insect or small mammal falls into them, the plant can dissolve them and use them for nutrition! -
What I'd do with the prize money:
I would use the money to make some new resources for the APHA stand at the royal horticultural show and to make resources for when I am promoting this career in school. For example, I could make some microscope slides with different pests/ diseases and buy form lateral flow kits so pupils could test plant samples for erwinia (fire blight)

Education:
I went to school Elm Road Primary School in the 80s and then I went to Wisbech Grammar School and stayed there for A levels. I then went to Sheffield university and studied Biomedical science which was mostly about diseases but in humans, not plants! I also got to do human dissection which was fascinating and sometimes yucky (I fainted one time!)

Qualifications:
I have 9 GCSES from A*to B grades in biology, chemistry, physics, english language and literature, history, german and latin.
I did A levels in biology, chemistry and history
I have a degree in Biomedical science and a PGCE in secondary education.

Work History:
I used to work in WH Smith when I was a teacher and as a waitress. After university, I worked in a call centre for Norwich union and then I did my teacher training qualification. I taught at different schools over 17 years, including being head of department at 2 of them. As my children are older, I no longer need the long summer holidays so I applied for this job which is part of the civil service.
