I think it’s almost certain there is life out there somewhere – mathematically, it’s almost impossible that there isn’t, there are so many different stars and planets in our universe. The universe is so big though that we’ll probably never actually see them, and they may not be advanced like us, they could just be little bacteria! I certainly don’t think we have to worry about aliens invading Earth anytime soon!
Statistically, it’s most likely, given the vast number of galaxies and planets out there. Even on our tiny little planet, we have “extremophiles”, usually bacteria, which thrive in extreme conditions. Acidophilic organisms, for example love acidic conditions (between pH 1 and pH 5); hyper-thermophilic (optimal growth above 80 °C). We even have different wildlife (molluscs and tube worms) living down in the deepest oceans with no sunlight, methane and hydrogen sulfide coming out of the earth’s very crust, and extremes of pressure. If creatures can thrive here, other harsh planets would seem quite reasonable.
The physics and chemistry that produced life on Earth is governed by rules that are the same throughout the Universe, so if the conditions somewhere out there were similar to those here 5 billion years ago then its is very likely that the complex chemistry necessary to kick start biology will happen and life could evolve elsewhere in our Galaxy and Universe. Astronomers are starting to look for environments where this might have happened.
However, whether than life is intelligent and able to travel in space, the question would be why would they want to come here!
