Towards the end of my PhD I worked with my supervisor to contribute to a research project proposal that got funding and led to the job I’m in now. Often postdoctoral jobs (referred to as postdocs) are advertised heavily across universities.
In terms of getting my first academic job, my supervisor told me there are lectureship offered at UEA in Norwich. I didn’t know where that was or who was there and asked my supervisor the latter. He told me the name of a very famous scientist, Norman Sheppard, who was one of the fathers of infrared spectroscopy. I decided that I’d give it a go and got the job. I started as a lecturer in physical chemistry on 1st April 1988. The rest is history!
