That’s a great question—and the answer really depends on the individual. Some scientists, once they reach retirement age, choose to step back and enjoy life at a slower pace. However, many—especially those in academia—remain actively involved even after retiring. They often continue to share their passion through guest lectures or ongoing research, driven by a genuine love for discovery and a desire to make a difference.
Some of them become “emeritus” professors, which means they are effectively retired and no longer get a salary from a university but may continue their work if they wish. Some go travelling, some just enjoy doing their hobbies full time! Same as most people at the end of a career I suppose!
It depends on the person! I work at a university, and quite a lot of our Professors retire but keep working. They cut down the number of days they’re in, but they come and play in the lab doing experiments, and all the fun bits that we get less time for when we have all the teaching and admin and stuff to do!
Some retire properly, and leave the university and go and live by the sea, or take on volunteering roles, or spend all their time joining choirs, or…
