Interesting question!
There’s a lack of chemistry knowledge in the general public and I’ve done a schools talk on my job which is discovering new medicines. I tried to lay out the tasks we follow and of course the chemistry but I feel that as long as people know what chemistry is and what chemists do then the details don’t matter for now.
For me chemistry got easier the more I studied it and I specialised in organic chemistry (the chemistry of carbon) where things are well behaved and follow the rules! You can at least plan the synthesis of molecules by joining together smaller molecules, although the actually making things is an art in itself and not always straightforward.
