I have done lots of small jobs and volunteer roles from the age of 13, I was a swimmer growing up so did some timekeeping and refereeing. I did commentating and announcing. I ran a tuck shop at school. But my first proper longer term job was as a lifeguard whilst I was studying for my degree which I started at 18. I have been an full time Scientist for the past 6 years.
My first job was when I was 14, I worked on Saturdays in a local grocery store called Cullens (they don’t exist any more, now that there are so many large supermarket companies) where I worked on the delicatessen counter serving fresh cheese, meat and other deli products. I learned loads about being customer focused, finding out what they needed, working quickly to avoid queues building up, using the machines to calculate prices, using the till for sales (no bar code scanning in those days lol) and following Health & Safety rules for fresh food storage, handling and packaging. It was a great introduction to work and I learned loads, as well as getting to know some great people who I worked with and earning some money for myself for the first time.
