During vet training at university we cover all the major species – dog, cat, horse, cow, sheep, pig, ‘small furries’ (rabbits, rats, hamster, guinea pig) and some reptiles too. Once you complete university you can choose your job according to which species you prefer to work with, so when I worked as a clinical vet I worked mainly with horses, and a few farm animals. Since moving into research I’ve worked with horses, donkeys and mules (cross between horse and donkey) and with dogs too.
