It’s actually not a science related thing at all. The hardest part of my job is managing people. Science can be demanding, and there can be many unknowns and thing may not work and you may not know why. So making sure everyone has the resources they need to learn, develop and grow; ensuring that they don’t overwork themselves; that stay motivated; and, the basic logistics of just scheduling many people is actually quite difficult.
It’s even more difficult given that in science you are often promoted to management based on how good you are at science, not how good you are at managing people. And most management skills you need to learn on your own in your own time.
