When you’re a vet student you spend many weeks working with qualified vets while they do their job, to gain practical experience while being supervised. One day, another student and I were asked to examine a horse which had been brought in because it had a wound on its belly that was leaking fluid, but there was no obvious reason for the wound. The vets we were working with had already used the ultrasound machine to try to get pictures of the inside of the belly but the pictures weren’t really showing anything useful so there was a big discussion as to what else we could do to figure out what was going on. The other student and I asked if we could take an X Ray of the horse’s abdomen. The vets said they weren’t sure that this would be helpful but they agreed that we could do it as it was painless for the horse and because he was standing calmly we didn’t need to sedate him for the X Ray as we might otherwise have had to. Surprise, surprise, the X Ray picture showed us a metal object deep inside his abdomen. It turned out that the horse had had life saving surgery a few years ago but a surgical instrument had been unintentionally ‘left behind’! Mystery solved, so it reminded me that there’s no such thing as a stupid question/suggestion in science! I have kept this in mind throughout my career, always check the basics, before you think about the more complicated stuff.
