The biggest experiments I’ve done where whilst at university. We were studying how temperature affects the structure and magnetic properties of some unusual molydenum and vanadium sulphides that we’d just shown to be part of a solid solution series (you could swap the vanadium atoms for molybdenum atoms without changing the room temperature structure). To get the detailed structure we needed we had to use the ISIS Neutron source at Rutheford Appleton Labs in Oxfordshire, a vast and very impressive machine for creating sub-atomic particles carved into the chalk hillside. Huge halls, blue lights, warning signs of lethal doses in very few seconds. Big science as I had dreamed of it. Even more impressive was that they were digging away a great chunk of what remained of the hill side to double the capacity of ISIS for science at the time. Long nights, 45min sleep cycles and hard days but very enjoyable. Got some very good and interesting results from it.
