      Great question. When we use powerful telescopes we can see tons of galaxies across the whole sky. They are arranged in a weblike pattern (a bit like a spider web). There are many regions where there are very few galaxies. Around them are line-like chains of galaxies and where they meet there are even more galaxies (sometimes galaxy groups or galaxy clusters). Because this weblike pattern is on very large scales we call it cosmic web.
