Overall, I think we have discovered millions of galaxies, many that are really close to us – we call these ‘local’ and then we’ve also found galaxies that sit in the very very early universe – sometime just after the big bang, but these galaxies are so far away and their light has been travelling millions of years for us to be able to see it. The galaxies we have found have also been in lots of different shapes and sizes and we can classify them using Hubbles tuning fork, whether they are elliptical (round in shape), spiral (have spiral arms) or irregular (look random).
