It depends on what you are researching, but when I developed a method to test for new contaminants in the water it took me about 3 years to research and develop. So most research takes quite a long time

It varies! Sometimes we can figure something out with a few short experiments. Sometimes research programmes take years, or even decades – for example finding the Higg’s Boson. My research projects normally take 2-3 years, and we find out several things during that time.
