Great question. My main goal is to help create an ecologically socioeconomic sustainable seaweed industry, leaving the place better than we found it. I’m looking at possibly starting another company but also would like to get some kind of biodiversity restoration project underway, thinking kelp bed reforestation.
My main goal is not just to ask why things happen in our environment but to answer the why. Most times 2 or more factors come to play and there are many indicators that can help us understand why and how these changes occur. I am focusing on how to use fungi in the soil to store up more carbon in the soil.
In my job I don’t focus as much on research as such, I collect and analyse samples of freshwater invertebrates, plants and algae and use the data we take on the ecology of rivers to determine various things about them such as how clean the water is or whether there is pollution. This is then fed back into the organisation so that the correct department can investigate the causes of any decreases in water quality and this can then be acted upon.

My profession was Geology but I’m no longer employed in it. I’m now a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Ambassador, visiting schools and colleges to tell children about the importance of STEM careers. I teach them particularly about Geology and its role in finding supplies of critical minerals and undersanding the pressures on our environment. I also teach them about renewable energy, especially geothermal energy, which is far more reliable than wind and solar, and about the responsible use of natural gas: generate electricity at the gas field, store the CO2 in the depleting gas field and then export the electricity to where it’s needed. So my main goal right now is to spread the message as widely and as clearly as possible: we need STEM and STEM needs us!
