How I use Science in my work:
My job is very heavily based around science, i collect rocks, sample and analyse rocks on a daily basis. When i am not looking at rocks i am applying computer science to understand more about the chemistry of the rocks and where is best to explore for more cool rocks!
-
My Work:
I’m a geologist who explores the rocks and cliffs of Cornwall to find valuable minerals. I look closely at different rocks to discover what is hidden underground and where mining might be possible.

I’m a geologist who explores the rocks, cliffs, and countryside of Cornwall to understand what is hidden beneath the ground. I collect small samples of soil to test what minerals might be in the earth, and sometimes we drill deep holes to bring up pieces of rock from far below the surface. By studying these samples carefully, I can learn where useful metals like tin or lithium might be and discover the story of how Cornwall’s land was formed long ago.
-
My Typical Day:
I wake up at 7:45, I spend my day either in the field (collecting samples or mapping) or in the office (more computer based). I finish work at 5 then usually go to the gym or spend time with friends after work.

What I'd do with the prize money:
If I won the £500 prize, I would use it to create fun geology activities for school students, especially those who live far from places like Cornwall where they can easily see interesting rocks. I would buy rock and mineral samples, simple soil-testing kits, and materials to make hands-on exploration boxes that students can use in classrooms. I would also run short workshops where students can learn how geologists collect soil samples, look at drill cores, and discover how we search for important metals in the ground. My goal would be to help more young people experience geology as an exciting kind of real-world exploration and show them how scientists learn about what is hidden beneath the Earth’s surface.

I started working at McDonald’s when i was 16 as a weekend job. I continued this throughout university to help pay for my living expenses and was promoted to a crew trainer. After i graduated i struggled to find a job in my industry that didn’t require a PhD, so i continued working at mcdonalds as an area leader for 2 more years while i searched for opportunities. Last year i saw the role of Junior Geologist on Linkedin and applied to Cornish Tin, 6 months into this role i was promoted to Geologist.
