About Me:
I seem to live in places starting with L! I’m from Liverpool, did my undergraduate university degree in Lancaster, and now live in Leeds with my wife and our cat. I love music (indie, pop, rock), video games, and food (especially going on food tours in different countries)!

If I’m at home, I’m most likely listening to music! I’ve gone to the same music festival in Bucharest, Romania (where my wife is from) almost every year since 2018, and find that music is perfect to accompany any mood. Sad? There’s a song for that! Excited? There’s a song for that! Schaudenfraude??? There’s most likely a song for that but it’s a complex emotion so it’d probably take ages to find I think!
Whenever I’m able to visit a culture that’s new to me, I really love to go on a food tour. It’s a great way for me to learn the history of a city or country through its food. In the last few years, I’ve done this in Mexico, Malta, Canada and Greece (there’s so much delicious food everywhere!).

How I use Science in my work:
I use chemistry to judge how different chemical reactions can affect the environment (like carbon dioxide or methane gases being released into the air). I use biology to assess how the release of other chemicals into water bodies (like lakes and seas) can affect the health of fish, beavers and humans.
-
My Work:
I work at the Environment Agency as a Permitting Officer. This means that I use Science, Geography and Maths to figure out if companies are doing their bit to reduce their impacts on the environment.
-
My Typical Day:
Normally, I wake up and have my breakfast (whilst trying not to wake anyone else up, and failing). I start work at around 8.30am.
Sometimes I’m working from home, and sometimes I’m in the office. My work day normally includes talking to people who represent different businesses, checking that some companies that make products (like fruit, vegetables, or robots!) aren’t effecting the environment more than is okay, and drinking a lot of tea.
In the middle of the work day I have lunch with some friends, and then I finish at about 4pm.

A lot of my work is about making sure that a company isn’t going to cause unnecessary harm to the environment. Whenever a company wants to make a product, there will probably always be emissions (which can be gases like carbon dioxide). This is expected, and it’s not always a bad thing compared to the benefits of the product that they want to make. But it’s my job to check this.
I do this by looking at their plant, and the different activities they want to do and judging whether the amount of emissions they expect to do are okay. For example, if a plant is making medicines for sick people or making toys for children. The emissions that they are allowed to make depend on the different equipment that they use and how big they are. I also look through their safety checks. Some companies have very big plants, and so if something was to go wrong then it can have bigger impacts on the people who live around it. For my checks, I look at what their plans are in case things go wrong, so that everyone who lives near them can feel safe.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I’d like to do sessions at schools and Universities around Leeds where I bring along models of different processes that are fun for kids and families to play around with.
I used to do a few sessions of outreach during my PhD, and one really great model was Betty the Cow. Kids could reach inside one of her 3 stomachs and feel slime and other icky stuff, so that I could show them how important chemical processes like anaerobic digestion work.
So I’d be really keen to design fun models for my new work at the Environment Agency.

I went to school in Liverpool, at King David Primary and High School, for my SATs, GCSEs and A-Levels. After this, I moved to Lancaster, where I got my undergraduate university degree in chemical engineering (Integrated Masters degree of Engineering). I then moved to Leeds for the University of Leeds, where I got a Masters degree and PhD degree in Bioenergy at the School for Chemical and Process Engineering (Integrated Masters degree of Science, and PhD).
