In my job we have to write a lot of risk assessments so that we limit as much as possible the dangers to us and other people. For example, even if we use dangerous chemicals we will wear gloves/lab coats/masks. Outside of my job I’ve climbed a couple of mountains!

Whenever I work with engines or batteries, I check the risks beforehand by doing risk assessments. At an old job, I even used to have a book where I did risk assessments on the go, to make sure we never did something dangerous. When we work with batteries, we wear special gloves and make sure there is no metal in our clothes (even zips and glasses). It still sometimes feels a little scary because it is big prototype equipment, but we make sure it isn’t dangerous.

I used to work on inshore work boats, mainly support boats for carrying people. As they are small boats it was the skipper and myself. Working around Orkney we were heading back from a job taking a cameraman out to Fair Isle and got caught in an approaching storm. We came very close to being flipped over by some very big waves. That is probably the closest to a sticky end whilst working I have come to.

Outside of my day job, I do cheerleading as a hobby, that can be really dangerous making sure that no one falls and hurts themselves when you have to toss people in the air.
