There are people now who claim to be bringing extinct animals back. The problem is that once a species is extinct, you don’t have any parent animals that can have offspring. No matter what you might wish to do in a lab, you’re always having to use living animals (of other species) to try and engineer an extinct species back to life. The ethics of this are very questionable, especially if the habitat the extinct species used to live in no longer exists (e.g. the Ice Age environments that woolly mammoths lived in). Better to focus instead on ensuring living species don’t go extinct.
