Although energy is never created or destroyed, only changed from one type to another, how “useful” that energy is can change. A lego car on a ramp has gravitational potential energy due to its height. As it rolls down the ramp, that changes to kinetic energy due to its speed. At the bottom it smashes into a wall and stops. The gravitational potential and kinetic energy have been turned into heat due to friction and sound due to the impact, and spread out into the environment. The energy still exists but it can’t really be used to make the car move again.

Hi Ben, I like legos too – I have a few lego robots that I program to drive around.

An energy fact – The energy (made up of photons) from the sun, takes around 8 minutes to reach earth after being emitted. But it can take over 100,000 years for a photon released from the nuclear fusion reaction at the center of the sun to reach the suns surface.

Hi Ben! Legos are pretty cool aren’t they? Energy is used to do everything, so did you know that you are using energy to lift and move lego bricks to create your favourite models? When I was little, I used to play with legos lots, and I got two of the thin pieces stuck together. I tried to bite them apart, but there was so much kinetic energy that my tooth came out. At least the tooth fairy visited me 🙂
