Geothermal energy is when there is naturally hot springs occurring beneath the Earth’s surface. It’s typically associated with magmatic activity deep below the Earth’s surface which then heats up the ground water. Some good examples are in Iceland, where there is a significant amount of Geothermal energy resource available related to the magmatic activity where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are moving apart (Mid-Atlantic Ridge). If the conditions are hot enough, steam can be extracted from deep underground which can then power turbines to generate electricity. If the temperature is lower, the hot water can be used for heating or be heated further to produce steam for electricity production.
