Emily is an astrophysics PhD student in Manchester her research involves studying stars in galaxies that are ‘close’ to us. She studies the activity of stars in galaxy M82 from when stars are born until they die and explode!💥 When Emily isn’t researching she likes to keep active by visiting the gym and running. Emily enjoys travelling and reading and spending time with her dog.
👏 Congratulations! 🥳
Emily joined I’m a Scientist in July and has been inspiring students in Chats with an essential cup of tea in hand!
A few words from Emily
Thank you all so much! I am delighted and shocked that you all voted for me to be your October Term winner. I have thoroughly enjoyed engaging with all of the students and teachers answering all of your weird and wonderful questions in the chats about space, physics and careers. A lot of the questions asked were aspects of science and physics that I had not previously thought about before, so you really put me to the test! I hope you have been able to see that me and the other scientists are just normal people (like you!) and we have managed to offer some insight into what it’s like to be a scientist working in space and physics, the why, the how, and maybe even the “what next?”.
Thank you also to the I’m a Scientist team, especially the moderators and organisers, for keeping the conversation going and making this whole process smooth and fun. And thank you to the institutes and funders (specifically STFC for my involvement) who support this kind of outreach – without you, none of this would happen. I’d also like to thank all the fellow scientists who I’ve shared many chats with: I’ve enjoyed sharing this experience with you and watching how you all explained your work and responded to students.
I’m excited to start planning an outreach activity with the prize money and can’t wait to get started!
To all the students who took part in the chats and asking questions: I wish you the very best in your future careers. You are the next generation of scientists if you choose to take that path! Continue to be curious and you will go far if you keep asking questions, keep pushing boundaries, and keep looking up (and outward).
Thank you again, you made this an experience I’ll never forget!

How is the winner chosen?
Each student has 1 vote to give to a scientist each academic year, and whoever gets the most votes, wins! It’s as simple as that.
But wait, there’s more: The winner earns £500 to spend in further STEM engagement!
Want to choose who wins those £500? Vote for your favourite scientist in the Vote Page!💬
