      Maybe they did! I don’t know if they have looked for evidence of microscopic bone damage when they find skeletal remains to know if the bones were undergoing lots of remodelling in response to the loads placed on them during exercise. Most species evolve to have a good balance between light bones (so they can run fast) and robustness (so they don’t break). It is usually when we start applying other selection pressures that we can sometimes start to see problems (e.g breeding horses and dogs for racing) as we are trying to create faster animals.
