I like learning about new things. My work is a combination of computer scientist, physics and engineer so there is always something new to learn about. Either from new projects to work on, advances in technology or even old technology that I’ve never seen before but get to work with as part of legacy updates.
I love solving problems. A lot of the problems I see are ones that I know the answer to because I’ve seen them before over my career. But every once in a while something new turns up. I might get to work with some new people in a different part of the company, or with a bit of technology that I’ve never worked with before and that’s the best bit.
I particularly enjoyed being a wellsite geologist, looking at the rocks as they come up from deep in the Earth’s crust and analysing the results from the various measurements that we did during drilling. Those analyses were used to decide what to do next, such as continuing to drill or to stop drilling. Those decisions involved spending possibly millions of pounds, so it was quite exciting!
