Gregor Mendel. He was the father of genetics. A science that replaced many religous ideas of what made people the way they are. Yet he was a monk himself. I’d like to know what his thoughts were on science and how this lined up with his beliefs.
Perhaps Johann Becher, not a famous Chemist but the one who came up with the idea of phlogiston, a miraculous material with negative weight, released when you heat things. His ideas proved popular and held back chemistry for almost a century. Hopefully he’d be open to the idea there might be an alternative reason why things gain weight when you heat them in air.
