      Yes, there’s a whole area of oceanographic research dedicated to this! It’s one of the things that got me interested in studying the ocean, how organisms can survive without sunlight. The deep sea is a very interesting and unique environment!

      There is a book called the Brilliant Abyss by Helen Scales that I would highly recommend. I love deep sea research and when at SeaGen we were working on cheap deep sea probes to be able to help monitor the abyssal plains. There are many people who are trying to discover more, especially as deep sea mining is becoming a key interest (or threat).
