I very much ‘fell’ into the field that I work in now. I went to university to do geology because that’s what i enjoyed the most at school, and in my fourth year I had a module on advanced analytical techniques, one of which was scanning electron microscopy. I fell in love with the microscopy, and was lucky that I had already chosen a research project that meant I got to work with the equipment for 6 months. I then applied for a job as an electron microscopy technican after university. As a kid I wanted to be a scientist or something to do with art (photography more when I discovered cameras) I found that mircoscopy kind of merged the two together. I’m doing science, but I get to take pretty pictures of the science.
