Great question. My main goal is to help create an ecologically socioeconomic sustainable seaweed industry, leaving the place better than we found it. I’m looking at possibly starting another company but also would like to get some kind of biodiversity restoration project underway, thinking kelp bed reforestation.

My main goal is not just to ask why things happen in our environment but to answer the why. Most times 2 or more factors come to play and there are many indicators that can help us understand why and how these changes occur. I am focusing on how to use fungi in the soil to store up more carbon in the soil.

In my job I don’t focus as much on research as such, I collect and analyse samples of freshwater invertebrates, plants and algae and use the data we take on the ecology of rivers to determine various things about them such as how clean the water is or whether there is pollution. This is then fed back into the organisation so that the correct department can investigate the causes of any decreases in water quality and this can then be acted upon.
